6/2/2023 0 Comments Sonic mania plus pc versionDespite it's age, many still consider it to be the best sonic game ever made, period. Sonic 3 isn't just the pinnacle of genesis sonic, but quite possibly the pinnacle of 2D sonic as a whole. Story-wise, this is where tails makes his debut, who is arguably the second most important character in the entire franchise, only behind sonic himself. It's worth trucking through just since you're at the very end at that point, but if you're using an emulator, nobody will blame you for using savestates on the final stretch. Sky Chase zone is an annoyingly long autoscrolling level, and Wing Fortress can be fairly annoying to navigate, but Metropolis zone is where the game really stops being fun. Sonic 2 REALLY emphasizes the speed of sonic, with it's levels designed for the explicit purpose of allowing you to blast through them at speeds the genesis was only sorta capable of handling once you've learned the level layouts. ![]() Sonic 2 is where most people really think Sonic got it's foothold and cemented itself as a gaming icon. In terms of story, CD is where the game begins introducing Sonic's secondary cast, with Amy and Metal Sonic making their debut appearances in this game, both of whom would go on to become incredibly important characters in future games. If you dislike the exploration though, you can also treat it just like any other classic game and simply try to get to the goal as fast as you can, and you can still get the good ending this way, by completing special stages instead of finding generators, though imo this method is quite a bit harder and less enjoyable overall. Getting all levels to have a good future in CD is how you get the true ending, and it's a really unique structure that no other sonic game really does. One other thing about CD is just how huge it's levels are, the game does an extremely poor job at teaching you this, but you're actually intended to run all around the maps and try to explore every nook and cranny in order to first get to the past version of each level, and then to find a robot generator and destroy it, which in turn creates a "good future" for that level. CD also takes Sonic 1's slightly abstract artstyle and cranks it up to 11, the game is incredibly colorful and it truly does feel like you're on a bizarre alien planet overrun by the doctor's tech. It's still a significantly slower paced game then Sonic 2, 3, and Mania are, but the game at least allows you to keep moving without randomly stopping you dead in your tracks for no reason. ![]() ![]() Sonic CD is a very divisive game, but I personally think it kinda just takes everything sonic 1 was attempting to do and does it better. There also wasn't really much important in S1 story wise since it was only Sonic and Eggman in that game. Given how it was the first sonic game, it's understandable that the game has some problems, but it just really hasn't stood the test of time all that well. Sonic 1 has a bad habit of just deciding to completely ignore the speed and flow that sonic's momentum system was built for and force you into slow, tedious platforming sections where you just mindlessly wait for some platform to move, a door to open, or other general annoyances. Personally, i'd say if you're going in to the classics totally fresh, you can entirely skip sonic 1 because it's kinda bad LOL. Sonic 3&K is undeniably the best of the genesis games, but 1, 2, and CD all come before it both timeline wise and release date wise if that's what you're asking.
